Bethel Manor is family housing for Joint Base Langley-Eustis. Most houses here are rented, and most families stay until the next set of orders. That puts a move-out clean on almost every household's calendar at some point. It usually lands in the worst week, after the movers pack the truck and before the move-out walkthrough with the housing office. By then your own mop and bucket are probably packed in a box on that truck.

Humid summers bring mildew to the bathroom

Summers on the Peninsula are hot and sticky, and Bethel Manor sits right against the Big Bethel Reservoir. Most households here have children, and a bathroom where kids shower every night stays damp long after the fan goes off. That damp is where mildew starts, as black specks in the grout and along the caulk around the tub. Left alone for a season, it stains the caulk for good, and scrubbing will not bring the white back.

Spring brings the pine pollen that turns cars yellow across Hampton Roads. It comes in through window screens and door gaps, then settles on sills and ceiling fan blades. Humid air makes that dust cling, so a dry swipe just smears it around. Ceiling fans are on our list, and so are windows, inside and out. Ask for the exterior glass too if it has gone hazy.

Late summer and fall bring storm season, and a week of rain turns every yard on the street into mud. With this many kids on the street, that mud comes in on a lot of shoes. Hard floors take the worst of it by the back door, and rugs hold grit that nobody sees until it wears a path. A regular clean here means mopping the hard floors and vacuuming the rugs before that grit grinds in. Marcus Douglas wrote after a first clean with us that we were "great with my dog."

Get the house clean before the boxes arrive

Families arrive in Bethel Manor on orders too. Even a short stretch empty leaves dust on the counters and dead bugs on the window sills. Cleaning before the boxes come in is far easier than cleaning around them. Once you are settled, regular visits keep the house clean between the big jobs. Some houses here run on one parent for months while the other is deployed.
