Beach sand ends up in every room

Most people in Virginia Beach live a short drive from the sand, and plenty live close enough to walk. Sand comes home in shoe treads and in the coat of a dog that just ran along the water. It works down into rug fibers and the corners of stairs. Once it's ground in, a quick pass with a home vacuum mostly moves it around. On hardwood and vinyl it acts like fine sandpaper under every step.

Salt is the other thing the ocean sends indoors. Wind off the Atlantic and the Chesapeake Bay carries a fine salt mist, and it dries on window glass as a cloudy film. A dry cloth only smears it. Houses near the oceanfront or along the bay get the heaviest coat, though a windy week pushes it well inland. Salt also holds moisture, so a window sill that looks dry can still feel tacky. Dust sticks to it.

On a house near the water we work from the top down. Ceiling fans get wiped first, so whatever falls lands on floors we haven't done yet. Rugs get vacuumed slowly and in more than one direction to lift sand out of the base of the pile. Hard floors get vacuumed before they're mopped, because a wet mop drags grit across the finish. Window glass gets washed with enough water to lift the salt. Exterior windows can go on the list too, if you want them.

Sandbridge rentals need a reset between guests

A lot of the houses in Sandbridge and near the oceanfront are rented out by the week in summer. Many Sandbridge houses sit up on pilings with long outside stairs. Every guest carries a fresh load of sand up those stairs, and the next family expects the place to look like nobody was there. There isn't much time between checkout and check-in. So the clean has to follow the same order every time.

What a guest notices first is rarely the big stuff. It's sand left in the shower, or a trash bin that still smells like the last group. Small misses like that end up in the owner's reviews.
